The Author
John Millington Synge, Irish playwright, was born into an Anglo-Irish Protestant family near Dublin in 1871. After attending Trinity College, Dublin, Synge studied music in Germany, Italy and Paris, where he met W. B. Yeats in 1896, who encouraged him to visit the Aran Islands and to write about the Irish peasant. Synge died in Dublin in 1909.
