The Author
Joseph Mallord William Turner, famous English painter, was born on 23 April 1775 at London, the son of William Turner, a barber and wig-maker. His father encouraged his artistic talent and showed his drawings in his shop. In 1789 he entered the Royal Academy. There, in 1796, Turner exhibited his first oil painting: «Fishermen at Sea». He opened his own gallery in 1804 and became professor of perspective at the Royal Academy in 1807. After 1815 he travelled around Europe and visited France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. He became famous as «the painter of light» and enjoyed great success in life-time. On 19 December 1851 he died in London and is buried in St Paul's Cathedral.
